Teaching smarter eating

Our goal was to design a solution that helps young people in the “Quarter-Life Crisis” stage of their lives to reduce food waste by providing a system that teaches wiser grocery shopping so that fewer items go bad, encourages smarter portioning so more leftovers get eaten, and provides better recipes so less food gets thrown out.

Training wheels for meals

We wanted to create a system that provides “training wheels” for helping young people  transition out of college. We wanted to address the root problems behind food waste and the habits leading into it. If we can address these issues in a way that helps the user change their habits independent of our system, we can consider it a bigger picture success.


Getting the platform mobile

We wanted to create a tool that would visually show the users not only lifespan of items but also the balance needed in order to use the items effectively. In addition to this, there was an emphasis that different foods could be used in different ways depending on where they were in their lifespan. Carrots could  go into a tasty salad at the beginning of the week and stir fry later.


Process and Thinking


A large part of this project took place on the backend. Before any wireframes or story boards were created, we hit the books per say and tried to get a better understanding of the problem we faced. Through user surveys and in person interviews supplemented by intensive research, we were able to determine key components of the problem which we could address.

Some the most effective tools that we used during this project were whiteboards and sticky notes. It was a way for us to quickly and easily communicate ideas with each other while not getting caught up on the nitty-gritty of the project.


Filming process

For all of us this project was the first time using video to tell a story. The shooting process was very much a learning experience and while looking back on there are elements could've been portrayed in a more concise way, ultimately we felt that the core concepts did come across. Learning from our mistakes one of the biggest takeaways from this was the idea that keeping things simple and concise often strengthens the story. 


Mood boards

Theses mood boards were a creative exercise that we used during this project to help us explore different aesthetics. After defining adjectives which described our platform, we found images that fell under these categories which were both interesting and inspirational. We use these mood boards to help shape the look and feel of our interfaces.
